Hot Water and Coffee Explosion
This is what happens during that brief moment when hot water from the coffeemaker's spray head first hits the coffee in the filter. The upper shot is the original photo (Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens) and others are cropped and zoomed from the original. From some angles and crops, it seems like a microcosm of a pyroclastic flow from a volcano that has just erupted.
Of the top four photos (immediately below), the two on the left show "before" and the two on the right show "after" the water's impact with the ground coffee.

"The Wolf"
...as my 5-year-old daughter called it. But then she started calling it "the bear." While I see her point with either animal, I still think it looks like a pyroclastic flow. Maybe we'll settle on Highly Caffeinated Pyroclastic Wolf-Bear.

A Little Later in the Process
And Just a Little Bit Later
After a Good Stir

versions)
And After Restarting the Water Flow (After the Stir)
The Aftermath
(Just a bunch of wet coffee)
