The Baby Ornates
Courtesy of a trusting friend of ours (thank you, Leeann), we now have a couple of baby ornate box turtles (Terrapene ornata). They hatched out in July 2005, making them about 4 months old at the time of these photos were taken. They were briefly put in with the sulcatas for a quick picture or two and a fast soak in some clean water before going into their own tank. The 10-month-old sulcata next to them looks pretty big in comparison, but even the sulcata is only about 3 and 1/2 inches long. The boxies are about 2 inches long.

(The white in the turtle's eye is the outline of the circular macro flash distorted over the curve of the eye. The turtle's eye is in reality only about 1/8 inch in diameter, so the overall enlargement is pretty impressive.)
